This series of walks for 2026 is from the book Beyond the End of the Line by Jeff Lock. Each walk starts at the terminus station of London's eight underground lines. This one is a circular walk from Stanmore at the end of the Jubilee line and explores Stanmore Common and Bentley Priory Park.
After a lengthy journey on the Jubilee line we arrived at Stanmore station around 11am. Across the road and we soon entered Stanmore Country Park.
A walk through woodland and then a steep climb up Stanmore Hill with increasingly good views, arriving eventually at London Viewpoint, one of the highest points in London at 152m..
The views from here are quite something, right across London. The nearest landmark is Harrow on the Hill church but planes could be seen approaching London Heathrow.
Leaving the summit the walk goes downhill and enters woodland. A rather steep set of steps had to be negotiated and then a stream crossed.
More woodland and we reach a small road. Country lanes and paths take us to the next part of the walk, following the London Loop towards Bentley Priory Park.
The first of several lakes. Here the directions came a little confusing and we got lost for a while but eventually picked up the Loop again and another lake.
A large lake. We should have turned off here at some point but missed that turning, ending up going right round the lake before exiting on the main road a little further down than we should have been.
Some very nice houses on the roads towards Bentley Priory Park, then the park itself is entered. The London Loop turns away here.
A pleasant walk through the park with a large deer enclosure alongside. Several deer were seen.
The walk continues through woodland then into open parkland. Exiting the park we then had to walk along the main road to Stanmore station and the train back to Waterloo.
